LifeVac, which is registered with and regulated by the FDA, uses a patented design that involves a one-way valve system. While the current interventions for choking emergencies revolve around generating pressure from underneath the obstruction, LifeVac implements noninvasive suction from the mouth of the choking victim. When the handle of the plunger is pushed down, air escapes out the sides of the valve, NOT into the victim’s airway; when the plunger handle is pulled back, it generates negative pressure, and suctions out the obstruction.
